Spending Time with my Closet

image

Sorry for my absence folks, but I had the itch to get my spring cleaning done early. My closet was an absolute mess. Seriously, it couldn’t have been more disorganized. I could barely make an outfit because I couldn’t see any of my clothes.
So I set up camp in my bedroom for the last three days going through boxes, and taking everything out of my closet. Then I did what seemed to be the impossible, I tried everything on. I took every piece I own off the hanger and tried them on one by one. This means I tried on 49 dresses, one of which was my prom dress (which still fits FIY). This took forever, but I discarded everything that didn’t fit. I feel much better knowing that when I look at the items in my closet I fits properly.

image

I am pretty happy with my finished product. Although I know what you are thinking “All you have is half a closet? Not even half a walk in closet, just half a sliding door closet?” It’s true, it’s a little ridiculous for someone who collects clothing to only have half a closet, but sadly I had to share with the Hubster because we only have one closet in the whole house.

image

Even though it is a small space and my hangers don’t match and my sweaters are stacked miles high and that there is barely space to move the clothes to get the dresses out, I feel okay about the organization. I put skirts together, then fancy dresses, linen dresses, sun dresses, everyday dresses, vests, leather coats and house coats. I think this system is going to work…for now. I will keep dreaming about a well lit walk in with a full length mirror and a couch.

What layout do you have for your closet? What is your dream closet?

much love.

Roxie's Guide to Hats

The Slouchy Beret

The history of the beret goes way back into history, so there is no way to be certain where or when it was invented. It was originally worn by men, but somewhere along the way fashion forward women took over the beret and have been putting their own spin on this hat ever since. Most recently the beret has been seen worn with the brim hanging on the back of the head, coined the slouchy beret.

This beret I’ve got on here was crocheted by my Nanny, and doesn’t have too much of a brim or slouch. The beautiful thing about the slouchy beret is that anyone can pull them off, and they are perfect for bad hair days. Another bonus of this hat is what is instantly makes any outfit seem more casual and cool.

I hope y’all have a good weekend.

much love.

Wishful Dressing

image

This is my I-Wish-It-Was-Spring outfit. Even though I love where I am living right now, like I love it. This place is so magical. However, the last couple of days I have been longing for warmer days. So, it has been a little bit warmer (-8 degrees) the last couple of days so I have been wishful dressing like it was a lot warmer. I should probably cut it out before I get sick…

Dress H&M, Boots Gifted, Leather Jacket Thrifted, Bag Aldo, Sunglasses Old Navy, Belt Vintage, Infinity Scarf Joe Fresh (for $2!!)

Before I go I must gush about how much I love this scarf. Seriously, it’s so big and plushy, it keeps me so warm and makes an excellent hood too.

And I should mention how much fun Minigo and I had outside in the snow.

Hope y’all had an excellent day.

much love.

Fashion Flashback

image

I really wanted to do a style post today, but the weather was not cooperating. So instead I am bringing you a fashion flashback style post, this outfit is coming from you straight from 2004. So that’s me as a no makeup fresh faced 18 year old. My style has really changed over the years in a lot of ways like I used to wear band pins on all my clothes, jeans, and just let my hair go free and I rarely wore full face makeup. But one thing that hasn’t changed is my love of this jean jacket, I still wear it to this day (you can see it here).

It’s weird and sometime scary to look back at past outfits, it’s interesting to see how your style has evolved and how the trends always come back around. I highly recommend taking a trip down fashion memory lane.

much love.

Menswear Mondays

image

I was thinking about all the style blogs I follow, and I realized there aren’t alot of menswear style blogs out there (if you know any good ones please send me the link). And personally I find men’s style just as inspiring as women’s wear. So, today I am starting Menswear Mondays featuring the Hubster. This week he’s donning his outwear that is practical and doesn’t make him look like a marshmallow man.

image

image

Since we live in a Northern Canadian community, it gets pretty cold like shut-the-town-down-cold-and-don’t-go-outside cold. So, it’s hard to keep a sense of style while trying not to freeze to death. But I think the Hubster keeps his style by not wearing a typical winter hat, instead he’s opted for a Driving cap. Plus his down coat that isn’t too puffy so he still has a shape and he keeps everything streamline by wearing everything in black and shades of grey. Now if only I could get him to wear the strings on his mittens inside his coat.

He’s wearing: boots Sorel, mittens local made, jeans and coat Old Navy.

And now another outfit photo with the cute local stray pups…

image

What you go guys think? Is menswear Mondays a good or bad concept?

I hope everyone had a delightful weekend.

much love.

Meant To Be

image

Have you ever felt like a piece of clothing was made for you? Like a designer somewhere was imagining your body when they were making an item? That’s how I feel about this coat. A neighbor of mine had this old coat laying around and thought I could use the fabric for my shop. I went to take the lining out of the coat to make a hat with it, but instead I tried it on. I couldn’t believe it, it fits like a dream. I have never worn a coat that actually slimmed me down but this one does (if I do say so myself). Which is really nice considering I haven’t shed my holiday pounds yet…or the pounds I had intended to shed before that…

DIY: Glitter & Gold Statement Ring

image

I can’t believe it’s been 5 months since I posted a tutorial! That’s really appalling, and I am very sorry. So, without further adieu here is a DIY for a sparkly, glittery, shiny statement ring.

image

Supplies—> White polymer clay, clay glaze, a ring back, paint brush, gold spray paint, small round cookie cutter, jewelry glue, fine glitter and something to create a shape in the clay like a sunburst or triangle or flower.

image

Step 1—> Roll out your clay until it’s around a quarter inch thick. Then use a small cookie cutter to cut out a circle. However, you can cut out any shape you want to like a square or oval.
Side note: you should probably work on wax paper and not your table top

image

Step 2—> Make a shape in the center of your clay. Use a pin or another circle or whatever you feel like. I used a triangle pin, and I went around the edge of the circle of clay pushing it in so it made a star burst depression. Just make sure there is enough of a groove to put the glitter in.

Step 3—> Bake according to the directions on your clay’s packaging. Then allow to cool.

image

Step 4—> Spray paint. I use an 18 kt. gold spray paint (only 5 bucks at the hardware store), I find it always results in a flawless finish…and it’s so shiny.
Allow to dry

image

Step 5—> Pour glitter into the star burst depression. Make sure you add a black and white glitter to your mixture of colors, I find it helps balance it out and give it dimension.

Step 6 —> Mix your glaze with a little water so it isn’t very thick. Take your paint brush and brush the glaze on, go slowly so you don’t end up with a big clump of glitter. Allow to dry.

Step 7—> Glue your ring onto the back.

image

Once the glue dries, all that’s left is to put it on and style it up.

I know this project takes a while due to all the dry times, but I swear it is worth it.

much love.

Long Lost Friend

image

The other day when I thought my luggage was lost and gone forever I was moaning because I thought I had lost this vintage cardigan. In honor of it be returned to be I thought I would throw it on. Sadly, the photos don’t do it justice; it has beautiful tiny seed bead flower embroidery and pearl buttons. I paired it with this lilac pink lace dress; the whole outfit is very light and soft which is not normally something that attracts me. But I am loving feeling like a lady in this ensemble.

…And yes I am standing on my bed which is sadly just a mattress on the floor, please just ignore it.

This necklace has so many baubles, but it is so light weight. Plus it makes a slight jingle when I walk, which I really love. for some odd reason.

much love.

The Spirit Hood

This is the most controversial hat on my guide. This hat/hood/scarf has been on so many do not wear lists I’ve lost count; but it is also so loved by teeny boppers and hipsters in their late twenties. These hoods come in a variety of animals including wolf, husky, night owl, fox and plenty more colors and ear shapes.

Personally, I love my spirit hood. It is so warm, especially since the scarf part of the hood has hand pockets. I think it’s really endearing and sweet. If you choose to rock the spirit hood, you need to wear it with confidence and a toned down casual outfit.

Stay tuned for more hat tidbits and factoids as I make my way through my entire collection of hats.

much love.

A Rare Opportunity

image

I was lucky today because it was an unseasonably warm out today only -17 degrees Celsius, compared to the typical -35 it has been lately. So I hopped at this chance and took some photos outside, which we all know look a hundred times better than inside photos. Sadly, most of my photos from here on out will be unflattering inside photos.

image

This outfit was brought to you by: Dress Suzy Shier, Boots Gift, Sunnies Old Navy, Coat Majora and Seal Skin Gloves by a local woman.

image

This is not my usual winter coat because frankly it is not warm enough, but on these sunny days I do enjoy taking it out for a spin. It has the most versatile and unusual collar/hood thing. Plus, I am really loving the all black in winter time because I feel it shows off my alabaster skin (yes alabaster, not pasty pale).

much love.

P.S. Later this week the Hubster has agreed to do an outfit post with his classy but warm outdoor gear.

Warm Grays and Mustard Yellow

image

This is my favorite color combination, ever. Warm grays and mustard yellow just look so good together. Unfortunately after reviewing these photos I realize the colors look good but maybe this cardigan isn’t the most flattering. Oh well, this is just my lazy movie day outfit, I’m sure Hubster doesn’t care that the sleeves on this cardi are a little saggy. Or that I have worn this gray belt 600 times…

This outfit has been brought to you by the following: Dress + Cardigan Old Navy, Belt Le Chateau

This charming locket was a gift from the Hubster. I love it. I love this strange girl with her gorgeous bee dress. He purchased this from Emily Winfield’s shop The Black Apple. Her art is so captivating to me and whimsical and weird and wonderful. I want to line my walls with her artwork…I also want a beehive dress.

Happy Lazy Sunday!

much love.

p.s. I put fancy buttons at the top of my page so you can easily see my fav outfits, DIYs, reads (i.e. blogs I love) and other things I thought would be interesting. Now I can pretend I am a real fancy pants blogger…except I don’t actually own any pants, hmm.

The Trapper Hat

These are the warmest hats going in my opinion. These were first created to keep (as you may as guessed) fur trappers and hunters warm in the extremes of winter. That is why they sit low on the forehead and have long ear flaps, it’s an attempt to cover as much of your head as possible from the elements. They were typically made using rabbit or fox fur as the lining with a leather exterior. However, in the past couple of years they have re-surged in popularity; being worn as winter accessories and made out of many man made materials.

Personally my trapper hat is like a best friend to me. It is super warm and stays on my head with the ties on the bottom, which is what I need considering in it minus 35 degrees Celsius today where I live. But it is not only useful in the cold, but looks great untied with a scarf, casual sweater, jeans and booties. Also, in my opinion can be worn by any face but fit is very important so make sure it is the right size.

Stay tuned for more hat tidbits and factoids as I make my way through my entire collection of hats.

much love.

p.s. my luggage was returned to me this morning, I am overjoyed.

Firstly, don't worry about your luggage. They'll get it back to you as soon as they can. But funny lost luggage story: When my roommate flew back to school after Christmas his Dad packed his suitcase with a layer of frozen moose meat and then he packed his clothes on top. The flight wasn't long so he knew that the meat would stay frozen. BUT THEY LOST HIS BAG FOR 4 DAYS. And when he got it back everything had thawed and it looked like his bag was bleeding. Unfortunate, but also a bit hilarious.

That must have been horrifying, but does sound like something you could laugh about later. Much, much later.

And thankfully they did find and return our luggage this morning.

A Late Happy New Years!

image

Vacation is over and we are home safe and sound (although without our luggage, but that is a story for tomorrow). The holidays were lovely and it was so wonderful to see the faces of all the people I love and miss so much.

Now onto my serious business; New Year’s Resolutions. I have always scoffed at resolutions, you know, they have kind of turned into a joke. No one takes them seriously and most people I know just make fun of them. But I got to thinking about resolutions, and they are really wonderful. Why wouldn’t you want to commit to bettering yourself? Why become stagnate? Improving and trying new things is one of the most wonderful parts of life. So I made a bushel of resolutions.

My Resolutions

1. Learn more. Pick subjects I don’t know much about and study them (maybe poetry, painting & architecture).

2. Write more. I don’t mean just blog more (although I plan on doing that), but write more of my life down, more of my philosophies and thoughts (especially about things I am reading).

3. Create more. For my shop, my home and for the people I love. It’s nice to see something you made, and it’s really nice to share something that came out of your brain with someone else.

4. Count my blessings. It’s so easy to lose sight of how amazing daily life is; how trees keep our air clean and spiders eat mosquitoes, and how bread smells delicious and how amazing it is that we can smell. Existing is really fantastic.

5. Eat wisely. Who doesn’t want to increase their chances of living to be 102 years old?

6. Have more creative date nights. Typical dinner and movie nights are lovely, but I want to put more effort into having different date nights like fancy cheese nights and silly photo nights.

7. Be more appreciative.

8. Take more photos. About a year ago someone did something to me that really took away my confidence as a photographer, and this year I hope to put that behind me and get my confidence back.

So this is what I hope to improve on and work towards this year.

I hope ya’ll had a great holiday season and a really magical new year.

much love.
