Mary Poppins

image

I have a killer cold today and therefore opted out of a style post because I look drek. Instead I’m giving you a peek into my bag.

1. Handkins bag from Aldo
2. Cat eye sunnies from Old Navy
3. Charlie Brown Moleskine planner
4. Post It Note pad
5. Neopiko pen
6. House & office keys
7. Photo of Hubster and I
8. Lipstick -Tutti Frutti, Blueberry Muffin, That’s My Pink, Coral
9. Vintage Compact
10. Ralph Lauren gloves
11. Hedgehog fabric coin purse
12. 7 year old Ipod
13. Flappers and Philosophers by F. Scott Fitzgerald
14. Cough Drops
15. Poketo Wallet with beautiful Canadian money
16. Kleenex
That seems like a lot of stuff, but sadly doesn’t seem like it’s as much as I usually have in there.
Here are my two favorite items.

image

I could not live without my Moleskine planner, seriously. I’ve had a lot of planners in my day but this one is the best. It’s got the best layout, a great pocket and I love the elastic strap and hardcover. It’s perfect. Hubster got me this Charlie Brown one as a present.

image

But my most precious possession in my purse is my wallet size photo of Hubster and I. We both have this same photo in our wallet, and both are pretty beat up from being in there for 7 years. It’s nice to have this funny photo of us from back in day, it always gives me a smile when I’m having a bad day.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this odd little peek into my bag.

I hope ya’ll have a good weekend.

much love.

P.S. I’ll be getting back to all those emails tomorrow when I’m feeling a little better.

Wanna Be A Guest Blogger?!

Hello there gorgeous, smart, funny, creative, wonderful you!

Now that I’ve buttered you up I need to ask a favor. The Hubster and I are taking a little trip back home on the second and third week of May, which means for two long weeks I will be wandering around Southern New Brunswick visiting friends and family. So, I don’t really think I will have constant internet access or time to update my blog that I love so much. So, I was wondering if…

Do you guys want to do some Guest Posts?!

I’m hoping so.

I will be asking a few people personally, but I am hoping to discover some new fabulous blogs by opening it up to everyone.

So here is my criteria:

I am looking for style, DIY, lifestyle, thrift or food bloggers but all types will be considered.

That’s it really. I dont care if you have been blogging for a long time or are just starting out, I dont care what format you prefer or how many followers you have.

If you are interested or would like more information you can leave me a comment below but preferably send me an email at roxiefitz@gmail.com, don’t forget the link to your own blog.

I can’t wait to hear from you!

much love.

P.S. I have 300+ followers so there is a small amount of free publicity

P.P.S This post looks weird without a photo in it.

image

There that’s better! This is an outtake from yesterday’s post, can you see the kids watching in the background?

Do You Want Fries With That?

image

How amazing is this print eh? I am seriously in love with it and it’s not even my style. But once in a while you see something and it just speaks to you and you know you can’t live without it. Every time I put this dress on it puts a huge smile on my face, and brightens up my whole day.
Oh, and the dress is so comfortable. And it has pockets. And there is really nothing bad to be said about this dress.

Take A Look At Yourself

image

Okay, so I know it’s not great blogger form to take your photos in the mirror BUT my hair looked so good in the morning with it’s natural curls that I thought I’d better quickly take some photos before the wind deflated them (see below).

image

I’m smiling, but my hair isn’t. Wind is so cruel.
And say hello to my blur of cat Felix.

I was pretty happy with this outfit, I feel like it looks really put together but office appropriate (even though most of the people in my office wear jeans and sweatshirts).

Anyway, I promise better photos tomorrow.

much love.

P.S. if you know where my title of my post is from you will win….MY Admiration and Respect.

Menswear Monday

image

On Saturday night my Hubster played his first professional gig. He was amazing if I do say so myself, he’s really quite the musician. And if you think I am a little too bias, I did record his show and I hope to put up a little video later this week (once I figure out how to get the video from the mini DVD to my computer).

Jeans- Old Navy
T-shirt- Underoath
Blazer- Thrifted

I think his outfit is perfect for the stage; it’s classy, but not overdone. Plus I think a proper fitting blazer really pulls any outfit together.

I hope everyone had a good Monday.

much love.

P.S. Thanks to everyone who sent me lovely emails and comments about my crummy Friday, the love really perked me up.

Wasted Outfit

image

Have you ever gotten up in the morning, put on an outfit and felt great?! It’s happened to me a time or two, when an outfit comes together perfectly and it makes the start to your day awesome. That was totally my morning. It started off wonderful; I had coffee with the hubster, put together this outfit and headed out the door to work. Then my day went to shit. I know it’s bad fashion blogger behavior to stray away from the positive side of thing, but some days you just can’t help it. Today was awful, you know it’s a bad day when you are the last person in the office on a Friday. But what was truly awful about this day was that my awesome outfit that came together to make me feel great was wasted on such a lousy day.

Have you guys ever had a outfit that the day didn’t live up to?

Have a good weekend friends.

much love.

Flowers in the Snow

image

Hey Party Peeps! Look at me, I am finally taking photos outside again. I mean, I am just standing on my balcony but it is outside. It was a balmy 5C degrees out today!
I love this dress, so much. I think it is super flattering, especially since I have a fair bit of hips to me. However, I feel like this outfit is so uninspired. There is no real pizzazz to this outfit, no edge. I am looking into ways to improve it. But it was suitable for work.

Dress- Suzy Shier

I added this last shot because I thought it was a little ridiculous to be outside in my bare feet right next to the snow. But I out right refuse to wear socks anymore, I am just so tired of those little feet prisons.

Anyone else hate socks? I can’t be alone in this.

FAKER

image

These photos are a lie. By the way I am dressed it would look like I am enjoying some warm weather because I have no socks or tights on, no sweater or scarf. This is all a lie. It is still in the negatives most days, and there is an abundance of snow on the ground. But yesterday I felt like dressing as if it were spring in my part of the world too.  So two minutes after I took these photos I had to put tights on because I had goosebumps.
I really love this outfit, I love the denim, gray and orange altogether, I think it is a lovely combo. So lovely I have barely taken it off, even if a jersey dress isn’t the most flattering.

I really wanted a new colorful piece to wear with my orange dress so I whipped this up earlier this week. What do you guys think? I thought about making some in different colors for my shop.

Tada! You made it to the end of my post, thanks for sticking with me even though these photos are fakes.

Happy Long Weekend.

Much love.

Colorful Art Journal

image

I have always started journals and never gotten more than a few pages in. I tried written journals, photo journals, collage journals and every other sort of journal in between. But the other week I was reading A Beautiful Mess written by the talented Elsie and she wrote a post on making an art journal. Then I had an epiphany! I shouldn’t try to make a journal that fits into a box, like a written feelings journal or photo inspiration journal, I should make a journal with no rules. Have a book I can fill in whatever way pleases me at the time. Photos! Decoupage! Quotes! Inspirations! Ideas! Everything! Anything! This revelation has pleased me to no end, I am feeling so jazzed about the whole thing that I have barely set down my journal since I started it.
I started with the cover, I simply layered different colors of construction paper and added my favorite self-portrait.

image

On the back I cut a pretty pink chevron pattern and added a Hemingway quote.
”I never had to choose a subject-my subjects rather chose me”
I really love to add quotes from people I admire, I feel like they are cheering me on.

image

This is the inside cover and first page. I found it so relaxing to just cut colored paper and arrange on the page. It is such a simple action but the way the colors look together and take shape are so inspiring to me. Green, black, white and yellow is definitely a color combination I am going to be using in an upcoming jewelry design.

image

These are a couple pages I am working on. I have been thinking about traditional Navajo prints, and really any kind of aboriginal patterns. They can be so geometric and so colorful. I think it is a lovely juxtaposition. I was thinking of making neon Navajo patterns to kick it up a notch.
On the opposite page there is a Ray Bradbury quote.
          “Don’t think.Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It’s self-conscious,
                             and anything self-conscious is lousy.”

image

This is my favorite page for whatever reason. It is the inside of the back cover. I made a little pixelated heart from pink post-it notes. On the bottom I added a quote.
”I like people and I like them to like me, but I wear my heart
where G-D put it on the inside”
I feel most represents the way I am, it’s written by the lovely F. Scott Fitzgerald (no relation).

Anyway, there is a little peek inside my journal. I totally recommend an art journal. It is a lovely way to spend an afternoon and a really lovely way to get creative. I am looking forward to adding fashion inspiration pages too!

I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend!

much love.

Heart Swoon

image

I am in love with this dress, since the moment I saw it I knew we were going to be best friends. The color, the cut, the crinoline all come together to become my dream dress. It makes me feel like a pretty little 1950’s housewife, even if I did have to go to work today.

Menswear Monday

image

As promised the weather is on our side now so I am back doing menswear Mondays! Which is all thanks to my lovely Hubster who makes the best model in my opinion and is very patient to do this for me.

Jeans-Old Navy
Sweater- Mark’s Work Wearhouse
T-shirt- Haines
Leather Jacket- For Him U.K.
Sunnies- H&M

image

What I love about this outfit is that it’s got a bit of edge due to the leather jacket and aviators, but the jeans and scarf make a little softer, more casual. And the hat completes the look. It just seems so effortlessly cool to me, like a little bit James Dean.

image

Well, I hope you guys all enjoy the return of menswear Monday!

Fringe (and no this is not about my DIY bangs)

image

I love every season where fringe is present in fashion. I find it so inspiring; I love the way it moves and swooshes.  I love that it can be any color, any length and on anything.

So here is my DIY, add fringe to anything.
Or everything.

image

Here I have is an old clutch that I haven’t used in a couple of years. I opened it up and hot glued a piece of black fringe to the bottom of the inside. I feel like it really brings a new life to it. Plus I love the way moves and feels between my fingers.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.

much love.

Spring is for Making Things

image

Hey party peeps! Sorry for the lag between posts, but I am been all caught up in the world of creating things. Inspiration is everywhere this spring on the internet, in magazines, in the sun and in everything piece of my clothing and in all my art supplies.
Sadly the weather here still isn’t great, we are still living with sub zero temperatures. So no outfit posts for a little while, even though I am loving all the spring outfits I am coming up with! No, I thought I’d share more DIYs I have been loving and making lately. This one is from the fabulous Erica’s blog P.S. I Made This . She posted this tutorial for a rhinestone headband, and I immediately went through my supplies and made one for myself.

image

It is super simple and quick to make. Although she used raffia on her headband, but I used embroidery thread so it took a little bit more time because I had to wrap it around a few more times. But I loved the results, it’s shiny but small and perks up a mundane updo.

image

After I was finished my first one, I decided I wanted to make another but a little bit bolder. I picked a wider headband, and used two strands of rhinestones and used a shiny bright orange ribbon.
I love them both but I have to say this orange one is my favorite. It’s so pretty and kinda makes me feel like I am wearing a socially acceptable tiara.

Anyway, I hope spring is bringing you nice weather and lots of creative energy.

Are you guys working on any DIYs this spring? Let me know I’d love to hear about it or see it or make it too.

much love.

Romantic Votive Holders

image

Spring fever has hit! The snow is melting, the sun is shinning, the air is warmer and the sweet tea is in the fridge. But for me the best part of spring is that my energy revs up, which means time to create! So, I few days ago I saw this project for Sweet Votives on the blog Fellowfellow by the lovely Claire and I knew I had to make them as soon as I could get some jars cleaned off.

image

They are so romantic lit up at night with the small flowers illuminated. This project is super easy and only takes about an hour, her tutorial is really easy to follow too! I only made one change; I added the twine to the top to give it a little rustic feel.

Anyone else feeling revitalized by spring? I sure hope so.

much love.

How To Make (and not make) Shortbread Cookies

image

Have you ever made a commitment to something then put it off and put it off until you had to throw yourself into a panic to fulfill your commitment? Well, that was me last week. Months and months ago the Hubster and I agreed to do a Scotland booth at the Multi-Cultural fair, which meant that we needed to make shortbread to serve. Instead of making a few batches over a couple of weeks and freezing them, I accidentally left it to the last minute and had to make 350 shortbread cookies in three days. And considering I had never made shortbread before it was quite the learning experience. So before I get to the recipe, I want to share a couple of my not to dos.

image

First, do not panic. When you are baking and panic mistakes happen like you accidentally try to add icing sugar when you kitchen aid mixer to going at full speed then flour, sugar and dough get everywhere like the floor, your hair, down your shirt, on your cat…

image

Second, do not skim the recipe. Since I was in such a hurry, I didn’t really read all the directions which ended up costing me more time because my first two batches didn’t turn out. When I made my first two batches I took them out of their pan and let them cool. A while later when I tried to cut them and they crumbled to pieces, like a million pieces. If I had read all the directions I would have learned that you need to cut shortbread when they are still warm to prevent the crumble.

image

Despite my initial failures, I did manage to successfully make 350+ shortbread cookies in time for the multi-cultural fair.

Classic Shortbread
1/2 cup softened butter
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1/4 tsp vanilla
1 cup flour

Preheat the oven to 350. Cream the butter, then add the icing sugar slowly. Add the vanilla. Then slowly add the flour. Once all mixed, knead the dough for a minute. Firmly press into a ceramic shortbread pan. Alternatively if you don’t have a shortbread pan, roll the dough out to about an inch thick and cut into triangles. Cook for about 28-30 minutes. Cool on the pan for 10 minutes, then remove to a plate or platter. If you are using a ceramic pan, cut it into pieces while it is still warm.

I suggest serving these with a great black tea.

much love.

Playing Catch Up

Hello Friends! I feel like I am perpetually apologizing for my inconsistent blogging. But here is another I’m sorry for neglecting my blog. However, I have been super busy! And I thought I would put up a little photo diary post of what I have been doing the last month.

image

These cold winter months just call for lots of reading, so I have been diving into great reads just as Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. And I have been working on sketching some dress designs, I hope to start selling my own designs in my shop by the end of the year.

image

On Valentine’s Day I made a heart shaped brownies (all thanks to my Ma) for the Hubster’s class.

image

We have taken in a stray dog (Rocky) from our neighborhood because she was limping around on her front leg and the temperatures were getting down to -51 degrees Celsius. She’s only staying with us until she heals up, then we hope to find her a  permanent home, even though she does fit in here with the family perfectly.

image

I have been slowly working on new pieces for my shop. I hope to have some great, sunny colored items for spring.

image

I have been experimenting with nude makeup. I have always been into super red lips and (well I can be honest) over done eye shadow. But lately I have done away with eye shadow, toned down the bright red lips and started adding a touch of blush. I love the effortless look, although I can promise you the red lips will be back.

image

I have been watching the gorgeous snow pile up outside my window.

image

And the hubster and I have been out and about enjoying this wonderful winter in our new town. We’ve built a mitchuap, gone to see his school kids play hockey and broomball, attended some great parties and jam sessions, and met a lot of cool people.

Also, I got the opportunity to work for Special Education Services at the school for a week. Something I hope to pursue more in the future.

What have you guys been up to? Tell me how you are getting through the winter months.

much love.

Slacking...

So, I don’t know what happened this week but it is already Friday and I haven’t done an outfit post or even taken any photos. I have been a little busy at the shop and I have been cleaning a lot too and maybe it is a little bit of the winter blahs. So, I apologize for my absence this week. I hope to get back on track next week. But for now I will leave you with an outfit that I am dreaming of putting together this summer. I am loving pseudo cowboy chic looks lately, and dreaming about walking through fields with cows. I can’t wait for summer.

happy weekend everyone.

Spending Time with my Closet

image

Sorry for my absence folks, but I had the itch to get my spring cleaning done early. My closet was an absolute mess. Seriously, it couldn’t have been more disorganized. I could barely make an outfit because I couldn’t see any of my clothes.
So I set up camp in my bedroom for the last three days going through boxes, and taking everything out of my closet. Then I did what seemed to be the impossible, I tried everything on. I took every piece I own off the hanger and tried them on one by one. This means I tried on 49 dresses, one of which was my prom dress (which still fits FIY). This took forever, but I discarded everything that didn’t fit. I feel much better knowing that when I look at the items in my closet I fits properly.

image

I am pretty happy with my finished product. Although I know what you are thinking “All you have is half a closet? Not even half a walk in closet, just half a sliding door closet?” It’s true, it’s a little ridiculous for someone who collects clothing to only have half a closet, but sadly I had to share with the Hubster because we only have one closet in the whole house.

image

Even though it is a small space and my hangers don’t match and my sweaters are stacked miles high and that there is barely space to move the clothes to get the dresses out, I feel okay about the organization. I put skirts together, then fancy dresses, linen dresses, sun dresses, everyday dresses, vests, leather coats and house coats. I think this system is going to work…for now. I will keep dreaming about a well lit walk in with a full length mirror and a couch.

What layout do you have for your closet? What is your dream closet?

much love.

Roxie's Guide to Hats

image

The Slouchy Beret

The history of the beret goes way back into history, so there is no way to be certain where or when it was invented. It was originally worn by men, but somewhere along the way fashion forward women took over the beret and have been putting their own spin on this hat ever since. Most recently the beret has been seen worn with the brim hanging on the back of the head, coined the slouchy beret.

This beret I’ve got on here was crocheted by my Nanny, and doesn’t have too much of a brim or slouch. The beautiful thing about the slouchy beret is that anyone can pull them off, and they are perfect for bad hair days. Another bonus of this hat is what is instantly makes any outfit seem more casual and cool.

I hope y’all have a good weekend.

much love.
