Our First Independent Home Made Thanksgiving

The Hubster and I made our first big move away from our families this year, and sadly that meant that we could not spend Thanksgiving (Canadian) with them. So, we pulled up our big kids pants (and skirt!) and did Thanksgiving on our own.

To our surprise it was really very simply and actually quite delightful. We spent the day together making the meal and enjoyed our supper with others who were away from their families.

In preparation for the upcoming holiday I decided our place needed a little festive decor. I made this simple leaf banner out of an old book. I took an old copy of Darwin’s Beagle and cut about about a hundred leaves out of the book’s pages and hot glued them to red yarn.

The Hubster tried his hand at baking for the first time. He made a delicious home made apple pie in the morning.

My holiday look included a blue floral dress, my late Grandmother’s apron (it brings good luck) and topped off with a handmade knit dark orange bow.

It was our first time cooking a turkey, but it turned out beautifully. It was so moist and fell right off the bone. We were so proud of ourselves! If you are afraid to attempt a turkey for the first time, I am here to tell that it is easy. To go along with the turkey with made mash potatoes, cranberries, stuffing and a chocolate cake (recipe to come!).

It was hard being away from our families, but doing little things like making a leaf banner and sharing a meal with others away from home made it a little easier.

Happy Belated Thanksgiving to all my Canadian readers and Happy Early Thanksgiving to all my American readers!

much love.

It’s Collections Tuesdays! Okay, so this is the first one so let me explain. I posted my collection of animal rings a few weeks ago (you can see it here). People seemed to like it, so I thought it would be a nifty idea to post a weekly photo of one of my many collections (I am not a hoarder, I swear). So this is my small but growing collection of brooches. Over the last year I have kind of become obsessed with them. They are so versatile. You can pin them to your shirt, on your bag, in your hair and used as a necklace. The fantastic blog A Reason to be Fabulous has a how-to for how to make your brooch a ring. I usually pick them up at the flea market, and some have been passed down to me from my momma. I think my favorites are the owl and the crab. They really add some magic to my outfits.
Do you guys have some nifty collections? I thought of maybe doing a reader’s collections post, you would be interested? Let me know. I have, what I feel, is an awesome DIY this week. Plus a very special outfit post too. So keep an eye out for them.
much love.
