Baby of the 80’s

I was born and (mostly) raised in the 80’s so I know all about neon. I remember one of my very first trendy outfits was this fit and flare dress that was black jersey on the top and bottom with this crazy neon geometric print. I remember feeling so cool, I loved twirling in that dress. Now when I take on neon I can only do subtle hints, I am not as brave as my baby self.

Dress- Suzy Shier (Similar-ish)
Bag- Kinies (old) (Check out her Etsy Shop!)
Flats- Jules & James (similar)
Necklace- The Black Apple (old) (Check out her Etsy Shop!)
Belt- Gap (similar)
Earrings- Hand me down from my Ma!

I wore my hair for the first time in a braided top knot, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I don’t think it makes a big enough bun in comparison to the size of my head. What do you think?

And how do you guys feel about neon? Digging it or is it giving you 80’s nightmare flashbacks?

Let me know what you think.

much love.

Shapes Over Styles

I just to have a certain style, when I was a teen I was, well, a punk kid. Can you believe it? I’m a little embarrassed. Anyway, the point being that I only wore punk style clothing like ratty jeans, studded belts, band tees and the like. I didn’t care so much about fit or shape. Now I base all my clothing decisions on shape and fit. I usually select dress that fit on the top and flare on the bottom to cover the parts of myself that I’m unhappy about (hello thunder thighs). I think that has been my biggest lesson in style. I don’t get hung up on things like whether I think I can pull off the bohemian or glam or retro or sporty look, I embrace all sorts of look as long as the fit is right.

Dress - H&M (similar)
Shoes- Blowfish (similar)
Bag- Aldo
Necklace- DIY
Sunnies- Old Navy (similar)

Isn’t that pup the cutest?

How do you guys feel about this? Do you go for a certain look first (quirky or conservative or mod) then worry about fit or are you looking for great shapes first?

much love.

Long Days

I have been working way longer hours the last couple of week (whiner, I know!) which has taken a serious toll on my ability to enjoy putting together outfits and has taken my creativity out of my outfits too. But thankfully my work place does not have a dress code, so I just threw on my favorite dress, cute flats and a cardi (not shown) and went about my day.

Dress- Modcloth (Out of Stock)
Shoes- Old Navy (Out of Stock)
Sunnies- Old Navy (old)
Ring- H&M (old)

Look at my poor red feet from working all day in uncomfortable shoes, oops!

Do you guys ever feel your style suffers when you get busy at work? Or does picking out awesome outfits help when the work load piles up?

I hope you guys are having a good week.

much love.

The Trench

This is a true smile of pure happiness. The snow is gone! I can’t believe it. The sun came out the last two days and the snow melted so fast. I wore my flats outside today and it felt so good to be able to switch it up in the footwear department.

I have to say that even though most of the snow is gone it’s still quite chilly. So thankfully I have my trusty classic trench. It is the perfect transition piece, it’s way lighter than a winter coat but it’s still long enough to keep you covered and warm.
Aren’t these pups the cutest?!

Who else is loving the neon and neutrals trend? I am. It brings me back to when I was a little girl in the 80’s. It’s so bright and fun.

I hope everyone is having a super week.

much love.

Colorful Art Journal

I have always started journals and never gotten more than a few pages in. I tried written journals, photo journals, collage journals and every other sort of journal in between. But the other week I was reading A Beautiful Mess written by the talented Elsie and she wrote a post on making an art journal. Then I had an epiphany! I shouldn’t try to make a journal that fits into a box, like a written feelings journal or photo inspiration journal, I should make a journal with no rules. Have a book I can fill in whatever way pleases me at the time. Photos! Decoupage! Quotes! Inspirations! Ideas! Everything! Anything! This revelation has pleased me to no end, I am feeling so jazzed about the whole thing that I have barely set down my journal since I started it.
I started with the cover, I simply layered different colors of construction paper and added my favorite self-portrait.

On the back I cut a pretty pink chevron pattern and added a Hemingway quote.
”I never had to choose a subject-my subjects rather chose me”
I really love to add quotes from people I admire, I feel like they are cheering me on.

This is the inside cover and first page. I found it so relaxing to just cut colored paper and arrange on the page. It is such a simple action but the way the colors look together and take shape are so inspiring to me. Green, black, white and yellow is definitely a color combination I am going to be using in an upcoming jewelry design.

These are a couple pages I am working on. I have been thinking about traditional Navajo prints, and really any kind of aboriginal patterns. They can be so geometric and so colorful. I think it is a lovely juxtaposition. I was thinking of making neon Navajo patterns to kick it up a notch.
On the opposite page there is a Ray Bradbury quote.
          “Don’t think.Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It’s self-conscious,
                             and anything self-conscious is lousy.”

This is my favorite page for whatever reason. It is the inside of the back cover. I made a little pixelated heart from pink post-it notes. On the bottom I added a quote.
”I like people and I like them to like me, but I wear my heart
where G-D put it on the inside”
I feel most represents the way I am, it’s written by the lovely F. Scott Fitzgerald (no relation).

Anyway, there is a little peek inside my journal. I totally recommend an art journal. It is a lovely way to spend an afternoon and a really lovely way to get creative. I am looking forward to adding fashion inspiration pages too!

I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend!

much love.

Neon Felt Rosettes

Hello! Sorry for my silence this week, but as I mentioned earlier I am super swamped. I dont even have time to drink my coffee and read my favorite blogs in the morning :(  Also, I  don’t have time to do a full DIY tutorial (I promise at least 2 next week), but I do have time to make a DIY suggestion.

My suggestion is to make fabric rosettes!

There are so many great tutorials for rosettes, I mean like thousands I am sure. Just google rosettes and you will find all the info that you will need to make them.

For my particular headpiece here, I just made a few rosettes out of scraps of neon felt, then glue them all together on one large piece of felt. Then I sowed a piece of ribbon to the back.

I sometimes use this headpiece as a necklace. That is the great thing about rosettes is that they are so versatile. You can make them out of any fabric, any color, any size and for any purpose. So get creative and make something beautiful with rosettes.

I hope everyone is having a fantastic week, and making beautiful things.

Much Love.

(P.S. Sorry this post is such a mess. Also, I am sorry for the bad photos. And that I am wearing my bathrobe in most of these photos)
